About Me
My name's Clive Gidney & I first started taking photos at the age of 10. The camera I had then was a like box brownie, it took roll film and had no controls at all - just a shutter button. But it taught me from an early age that you don’t necessarily need a sophisticated camera to take evocative images.
In my teens I graduated to my first “proper” camera - a Praktica 35mm slr with a 50mm Zeiss lens. It was totally manual, manual wind on, manual focusing, manual shutter speed & aperture settings with match needle exposure metering. Being totally manual it taught me a huge amount about photography.
When I left college, I no longer had access to darkroom facilities, so I switched to colour film, for which I had to rely on the local lab for processing & developing. During this time I developed my skills at a range of genres of photography.
An then came the digital revolution. My first digital camera was a Nikon Coolpix 990 which was an unusual swivelling design with a whopping 3 megapixels. I loved that camera; it was small enough to fit in my pocket so it went almost everywhere with me. I won my first camera club competition with an image taken on this camera but unfortunately due to a hard drive failure a few years ago I’ve no longer go that image.
I am a past president of a highly regarded West Midlands photography club and ran workshops for them on all aspects of photography.
For much of my professional career, I worked in a bank and my passion for photography was my hobby. In early 2000’s I created a website & started undertaking some portrait photography professionally on a part time basis. Then in 2012 I left the bank to develop my photography business full time.
Now I have three cameras -
My Canon 7Dii with 20mp and a bag full of lenses for my professional work
A Panasonix GX7 with 16 mp & 20mm & 45mm lenses which is my go anywhere camera
My Nexus 5X phone camera with 12mp
And the great news is that, to get started taking amazing photos with my Cool Photography course, you don’t need to know anything about cameras, these modules will work whether you use your phone, a sophisticated dSLR or anything in between.
